Do You Need a Permit to Rent Heavy Equipment?

What Are the Other Equipment Rental Requirements?

Operator’s License 

Rental companies usually ask for a driver’s license for machines like dump trucks or other equipment that travel on highways. This provides both ID and proof of eligibility. Some larger machines may require a Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) under Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration rules.

Some states add unique rules. For example, in Massachusetts, you need a temporary permit from a state-approved supplier to rent mini excavators or similar machines.

Training

Because heavy equipment poses safety risks, rental companies may ask for proof of training. This ensures compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. 

Some equipment also requires certification before operation. Many rental companies offer training that leads to certification, either at the dealership, your facility or on the jobsite.

Insurance

Most rental providers require proof of insurance before you can take equipment off their lot. Insurance protects both your company and the rental provider in case of accidents, theft, or damage. 

• General liability insurance protects against property damage or injuries.
• Inland marine insurance helps cover repair or replacement if a machine is stolen or damaged, subject to a deductible. 

The rental agreement will list coverage requirements. If you don’t already have coverage, you can buy it from an insurer or, in some cases, through the rental company.
